Earth Nourishing Cabbage Soup // I went over this in stories last night if you want to check it out while it’s still up. Ive been thinking a lot lately about food that nourishes the spirit, grounds us, & soothes the nervous system. These are Earth phase foods. And this happens to be Vata season and Metal season - Earth foods support these phases, as well as support us in turmoil, stress, or times of great fluctuation and change. These are our current times. To make this soup | ½ head green cabbage + 2 carrots + 1 small potato + 1 head fennel + 1-2 tsp anise seed + 2 tbsp ghee. Chop everything and sauté in ghee with anise until the veggies start to reduce in size and become tender. Add 5 C water and simmer for about 20 min. Add in 1-2 tsp light/ mellow miso and stir well. Remove half of the soup and blend/liquefy until smooth and return to pot. Stir together, add salt if needed, and serve. | This soup is naturally sweet and very aniseedy in flavor. The cabbage is cooling for stress and gut inflammation and the anise + fennel add warmth & movement to avoid stagnation. This is a quintessentially Earth phase soup to balance Vata and nourish Metal this fall. It’s great for promoting healthy digestive function & centering yourself. Must like anise flavor to enjoy. Take care of yourself and each other. 💗

Sometimes on a flexible morning I’ll do “second breakfast,” especially if first breakfast was wack. As in, I ate an almost cold boiled egg a + 3 bites of avocado + lukewarm tea while hustling my kids off. Perfect time for second breakfast… usually about 1-2 hours after first breakfast. Today it’s a very nice bowl of leftover Millet with coconut milk, sautéed apples in ghee with cinnamon, cardamom + ginger. If you’re thinking ahead you can make this your first breakfast very easily and be done with it. 🧡🍃🍁.

Is it possible to have too much miso and ginger tea? Like how much is too much? Asking for a friend. Also, when your last kid is still asleep at 8am, everyone else has already been gone for half an hour and you feel sooooo grateful for extra quiet / productive time but also 🤔!

Another (easiest) way to use mung beans. They have a lovely crunch in salads when still raw, these are soaked & sprouted. You can also just toss sprouted mungs in a bit of ghee + sea salt and sauté them for a few minutes - that’s what I usually do - and they are wonderful as a topping on most anything. 💗

I was having a conversation with some friends recently about making healing foods vs. restaurant foods. See, I’m not a chef. I’ve never been through culinary school and honestly, I have a bit of a complex about cooking for other people because of this. My food is good. It’s simple, wholesome. It’s thrown together. It’s even delicious. But it also tastes great to me because my palette isn’t so attuned to the extremes of sugar and salt that it used to be years ago. These extreme tastes that we find in restaurants and in packaged foods are not healing tastes. When making therapeutic foods, we let the food taste of what it is. I love this quote to remind me that when it comes to eating, and many other things in life, I don’t need to be fancy to be fulfilled. ❤️.

My fave kind of salad - cooked + raw; some sweet, some sour, some spicy, some bitter and pungent. Why are meals like this so satisfying? It’s the whole circle of 5 elements in a bowl. 🏵 Happy weekend!

I’ve eaten SO many sweet potatoes in my life you guys. I often think I won’t ever eat one more and then along comes a new way that keeps this humble food on my plate. This is basically a direct copy of @saladforpresident - I saw an IG story she did one week assembling coleslaw onto a sweet potato and I was like - yes ma’am!! I’m sure hers is way better than mine but since I had no clue of the actual recipe this is what I did to replicate it: 1 baked sweet potato rubbed with salt and baked at 375 for 45 min then broiled for a few minutes more. Drizzle it all with tahini and diced green onions. Make a huge batch of slaw with red cabbage & fresh mint and dressing of avocado oil, salt, pepper, sumac, cumin, red chili, lime juice. Add some fresh feta and avocado and more chili flakes and you’ve got a WINNER. 🙌🙌.

I ate a version of this about 4x last week… it was the best lunch I’ve had in awhile including that rice cake 😂. It’s not easy eating gluten and dairy free all the time - it’s something I’m trying for my own health now and I don’t succeed 100% every day - although I did turn down some good AF Detroit style pizza last night, so 👏 for me. Planning beautiful, delicious lunches like this help. *Tip: when you have restrictions in your diet try buying 1-2 slightly indulgent ingredients for the week to make your meals feel special. It’s really helpful to add something fun when you have to take things away and will leave you feeling less short-handed. I did that this week with these pretty purple cilantro, kohlrabi & radish micro-greens… all my meals seemed so playful and inviting with them. // Collard leaf wrap with hummus, pecans, roasted sweet potatoes, leftover wild salmon, red cabbage kraut, micro greens, dulse flakes.

Artichoke monsters. I wish I could feed them one every day, maybe then they’d eventually get sick of them and actually leave some for me one day. :) Honestly, it’s one of my greatest pleasures watching my kids enjoy the favorite foods I enjoyed as a kid with my mom. Artichokes and mangos and pomegranates hold special memories, I remember it so vividly. I think because it was so experiential to eat these fun foods - like performing a ritual to get to the good stuff. Hoping to create memories for them too. .
.
Artichokes are known as a digestive aid that stimulate the appetite. They also help liver and gall bladder function by stimulating bile secretions, can lower serum cholesterol and have tons of anti-oxidants to help your body fight free radicals. @medicalmedium also says they play a crucial role in thyroid healing as certain compounds can act as a protective shield for the thyroid gland - guarding it from viruses and pathogens. Pretty interesting. So delicious too. ❤️.

A little for them. A little for me. Are any of you still dealing with on & off (or even constant) sickness this season? I keep hearing stories, seeing all the kids out of school, and keep trying to protect my own family after we had the flu a few weeks ago. This is a cycle that becomes incredibly frustrating for families. Please remember, getting sick does not mean you failed at something. Here’s a little pick me up juice we’ve been making to keep our immunity and spirits up. ☀️ 1 C organic Pineapple juice / 2 small celery ribs / ~3 in. length of cucumber / few large basil leaves / squeeze of lime juice / probiotic powder / 1 tsp ginger (or few dashes ginger powder). Tons of vitamin C in here. Tons of anti-inflammation. Probiotics to keep our guts strong. Some ginger to also fire up the digestion —-> which helps the immune/respiratory system.

NOURISHING METAL-VATA / In the current vulnerable season for Metal (aka Vata season in Ayurveda) it’s important to eat moist, soft, warming, hydrating foods. These foods balance the dryness and lightness of this element - an Air element - when it’s imbalanced or at its most extreme. Steamed Asian pear is a classic Chinese Medicine food cure for treating dryness in the lungs or lingering cough. Sooooo tasty too with my add-ins here. 👌. Enjoy if you are in need.
.
.
Steamed Asian Pear with Ginger, Herbs & Honey // 1 whole Asian pear cut and cored, 2 tsp grated ginger root split evenly between pear halves, few sprigs thyme and/or sage leaves. Assemble in steamer basket and fill with 1” water. Steam for ~12-15 minutes until tender and just softened, depending on size of pear. Drizzle with raw honey of choice and eat immediately. ✨.
