Earth Nourishing Cabbage Soup // I went over this in stories last night if you want to check it out while it’s still up. Ive been thinking a lot lately about food that nourishes the spirit, grounds us, & soothes the nervous system. These are Earth phase foods. And this happens to be Vata season and Metal season - Earth foods support these phases, as well as support us in turmoil, stress, or times of great fluctuation and change. These are our current times. To make this soup | ½ head green cabbage + 2 carrots + 1 small potato + 1 head fennel + 1-2 tsp anise seed + 2 tbsp ghee. Chop everything and sauté in ghee with anise until the veggies start to reduce in size and become tender. Add 5 C water and simmer for about 20 min. Add in 1-2 tsp light/ mellow miso and stir well. Remove half of the soup and blend/liquefy until smooth and return to pot. Stir together, add salt if needed, and serve. | This soup is naturally sweet and very aniseedy in flavor. The cabbage is cooling for stress and gut inflammation and the anise + fennel add warmth & movement to avoid stagnation. This is a quintessentially Earth phase soup to balance Vata and nourish Metal this fall. It’s great for promoting healthy digestive function & centering yourself. Must like anise flavor to enjoy. This is fascinating - I encourage you to read on // A beautiful part of Chinese medicine is that there is an aspect of our spirit connected to each organ system in our bodies - it fully integrates mind, body & spirit on a founding level. 🧡. The Yi is the part of our spirit-mind that is intellect/ thought / analysis / mental processing and mental “digestion”, if you will. The Yi is actually tied to our digestive organs- the spleen and stomach of the Earth element which is about rooting ourselves and feeding ourselves. Which makes sense when you think about digestion - we can digest food but we also digest information and content. Do you ever feel like your appetite gets affected by stress? Nervous stomach? IBS that is worse with stress or over-working? This is incredibly common. Sometimes we over-eat or over-think (the latter actually seems more common these days). Most people don’t realize that these two things can damage the same system in our bodies! Our bodies do not like to work on mental & physical digestion at the same time. Of course we had to do this today 🎃. Did you know that pumpkin and squash seeds have valuable health benefits? For starters they are vermifuge! This means they will help expel worms and parasites from the gut. They have a specific influence on the colon and digestive organs being an EARTH element food, and because of this can also be used to calm motion sickness or nausea. I’ve been in awe of 5 Element food therapy & Chinese medicine food dietetics for over 10 years. 5 Elements (often called 5 Phases) are EARTH / METAL / WATER / WOOD / FIRE. The Qi of the earth element flourishes in Indian Summer, those golden moments of fullness before the waning of the light. The earth color is yellow, like the sun, the ripened crops, and the root vegetables.
